Coronavirus Updates as of April 3, 2020

 

  • All TAMU-sponsored faculty-led, field trip, and student group programs departing between now and the end of Summer II session, Aug. 3, have been canceled.
  • Students involved in non-TAMU sponsored trips – such as Affiliate Provider, Exchange, or Independent Travel programs, are highly encouraged to postpone or cancel their participation.

See below for additional information about next steps for each of these program types.


General Education Abroad operations

  • Hours: In person office hours have been suspended beginning Monday, March 23,2020. Students who need to the visit the office should make an appointment by calling 979-845-0544, or emailing abroad@tamu.edu. Education Abroad staff will continue to answer emails and phone calls during regular business hours.

  • Appointments: Education Abroad will soon launch virtual advising appointments. Additional details coming soon.

  • Passports: Passport services and photo operations are closed until further notice. Education Abroad is consulting with U.S. Department of State agencies to establish appropriate protocols and procedures for future passport operations. Passport services may resume on an appointment-only basis in the future. Please watch this page for continued updates.

  • Orientations and Training: All Health & Safety Orientations, 101 Sessions, and Faculty/Trip Leader Briefings have been canceled and will resume using a remote delivery method beginning in April. Please watch this page for continued updates.



TAMU Sponsored Faculty-led and Field trip program cancelations

Programs departing between now and Aug. 3: All TAMU-sponsored programs departing between now and Aug. 3 , 2020, have been canceled. Participants in these programs should cancel flights immediately. Many airlines are waiving cancelation fees if you mention the cancelation is COVID-19 related. Administrative and program fees associated with your TAMU-sponsored program will be refunded (see below for additional information about refunds). A representative from the Education Abroad should be in contact with anyone effected by this cancelation.

 

Affiliate Provider, Exchange, and Independent Travel programs

Programs that depart between now and Aug. 3, 2020: Students planning to depart on non-TAMU sponsored trips – such as Affiliate Provider, Exchange, or Independent Travel programs – should cancel or postpone their travel. We are currently under a Global Level 4 Travel Advisory and the U.S. Departments of State recommends that all U.S. citizens avoid international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.  Due to the seriousness of the COVID-19 situation, impending border restrictions and closures, and the myriad of financial commitments made by students and families, we are confident that this is the best course of action.

If you choose to cancel your participation in a non-TAMU sponsored program or defer your experience to a future term, please do the following:

  • Inform your provider that you would like to cancel or defer your program and ask about options for reimbursement and/or future programs.  Many providers have extended their deadlines and withdrawal policies given the COVID-19 outbreak.  Please CC: your education abroad adviser using tcabroad@tamu.edu.

  • Call and/or email your academic adviser to let him/her know your situation and to identify immediate academic needs due to no longer going abroad this summer.

  • Reach out to your airline carrier to cancel your flight.  Please reference that it is COVID-19 related and you may be able to get a full or partial refund or a voucher for future travel.

  • Email your education abroad adviser at tcabroad@tamu.edu to let us know if you are canceling or deferring your May/summer program. If you cancel your program, we will refund the $100 administrative fee.  If you defer your program, let us know the new term you intend to go abroad and we’ll update your application in the portal accordingly. 


If you still wish to pursue this opportunity, you must do the following:

  • Check with your provider to ensure they have not canceled your program.

  • Be aware that institutional aid and/or federal aid may be restricted due to the travel ban.​
  • Understand that you may not be able to re-enter the U.S. for an indefinite period of time.
  • Notify Education Abroad that you are still pursuing your provider program abroad at abroad@tamu.edu.​



Refunds

Education Abroad and Texas A&M University are working diligently to assess and issue refunds for students affected by program cancelations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic promptly. Please be patient as we work through this process.

Program fees and administrative fees posted to student accounts by Education Abroad for canceled TAMU-sponsored programs departing between now and Aug. 3, 2020, will have the charges reversed.

Outside Providers: For non-TAMU sponsored programs that have been canceled – such as Affiliate Provider, Exchange, or Independent Travel programs – please contact your host institution, affiliate provider, or responsible TAMU department for questions related to refunds. 
 
 

Late summer and fall programs

Summer: Some August programs departing on or after Aug. 4, 2020, have been canceled. Education Abroad will notify students if the status of their August program has changed.
 
Fall: To date, fall 2020, winter 2021and beyond Education Abroad programs are proceeding as usual. For more information about study abroad opportunities, please visit the Education Abroad website at abroad.tamu.edu, call 979-845-0544, or email abroad@tamu.edu. Given the fluidity of the COVID-19 situation, students are advised to hold off on purchasing flights until the trip is confirmed.
